LSVT BIG
Retraining the Brain for Bigger, More Purposeful Movements
We’re excited to share that one of the teams at Lycoming Physical Therapy is now officially certified in LSVT BIG, a specialized physical therapy program that helps people move with more confidence, energy, and purpose.
This program was originally developed for individuals with Parkinson’s disease but has since been shown to help people with other neurological conditions, including stroke, regain better control of their movement – and their quality of life.
What Is LSVT BIG?
LSVT BIG is an intensive, evidence-based physical therapy program designed to improve the size and strength of body movements, particularly in people with Parkinson’s disease.
One of the main symptoms of PD is that it causes movement to diminish over time, becoming smaller, slower, and more rigid. These changes can affect walking, balance, and posture, making it harder to complete everyday tasks.
Through a structured treatment plan, LSVT BIG helps retrain the brain to support larger, more natural movements. This approach improves function, reduces the risk of falls, and allows people to live with more independence.

Who Can Benefit from LSVT BIG?
Because LSVT BIG is grounded in the principles of neuroplasticity — how the brain learns and rewires itself — it helps support meaningful improvements when neurological damage has occurred. So, although the program was originally developed for Parkinson’s disease, research shows it can also benefit the following:
• People recovering from a stroke
• Those living with multiple sclerosis (MS)
• Individuals with balance and coordination issues
• People managing the long-term effects of brain injuries or other neurological conditions
These conditions can lead to various movement-related challenges, including:
• Loss of balance and coordination
• Muscle stiffness and fatigue
• Trouble walking or moving quickly
• Anxiety and fear of falling
Over time, these symptoms can make it harder to stay active and independent. LSVT BIG addresses these challenges directly, helping patients experience an improved quality of life.

Core Elements of the LSVT BIG Program
LSVT BIG is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s a personalized treatment plan delivered by our specially trained physical therapists. Here’s what makes it unique:
• High-Effort Movements
Each session focuses on big, exaggerated movements to activate the whole body. These movements help reprogram how the brain and nervous system send signals to the muscles.
• Repetition and Consistency
The standard program is delivered four times per week for four weeks. This consistent schedule is essential to help reinforce movement patterns and make lasting changes.
• Whole-Body Engagement
LSVT BIG includes both upper and lower body exercises which are designed to improve coordination, speed, and control — whether you’re reaching for something on a shelf or walking down the hallway.
• Personalized, Functional Goals
We tailor all BIG sessions to your needs. Our team will identify specific goals you want to work toward – such as bringing in groceries or getting up from a chair with ease – and then work those tasks directly into your training. Real-world practice is a key part of every session.

Three Ways LSVT BIG Can Be Life-Changing
1. Better Balance and Fewer Falls
Many people report feeling steadier on their feet, thanks to the program. For example, one patient who struggled with freezing episodes while walking was able to regain smoother, more continuous steps, reducing their risk of falls at home and in the community.
2. Enhanced Walking Speed and Endurance
With the program, walking can become faster and more efficient. Amplifying your steps helps counteract the shrinking effects of Parkinson’s disease. Some patients even report less reliance on mobility aids, such as a cane or walker.
3. Greater Independence with Daily Activities
Simple tasks like getting dressed, cooking, or cleaning become easier. After training movements like reaching, turning, and stepping, one participant reported that they could finally put on their jacket without help — something they hadn’t done in months.

Directions:
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Toss the tomato, squash, chives, lemon zest and 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large bowl. Season with salt. Sprinkle in half of the goat cheese. Add the pasta to the boiling water and cook as the label directs, adding the wax beans to the pot during the last 3 minutes of cooking. Reserve 1/4 cup of the cooking water, then drain the pasta and beans and add to the bowl with the vegetables. Drizzle with the reserved cooking water and the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil and toss until the goat cheese begins to melt. Add the parmesan and toss. Divide among bowls and top with the remaining goat cheese.
